“Botox and fillers are not just about erasing wrinkles and fine lines, they’re about restoring a natural, radiant appearance that reflects how you feel inside.”

– Dr Debra Jaliman

Botox and dermal fillers are the two most popular options for non-invasive aesthetic treatments. They are designed to revitalise your look but work differently to achieve that.

What is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxin protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. After injection into muscle, it blocks the release of acetylcholine (chemical neurotransmitter), temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines. Botox typically lasts for 3-4 months on average, varying from individual to individual.

Common areas for Botox include forehead lines (that make you appear stressed), crow’s feet around the eyes (that deepen when you smile), and frown lines (that look like the number 11 between your eyebrows).

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel-like materials injected into the skin to restore volume, smoothen wrinkles and enhance facial features. There are several types available, but more commonly used include Hyaluronic Acid (HA), Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA), and Poly-L-lactic Acid (PLLA) - each with its own characteristics, duration of action and suitability for specific areas of the face. Dermal fillers can last 6-24 months on average, depending on the type of filler used.

More popular uses for fillers include filling in nasolabial folds (those trench lines adjacent to your mouth), sculpting cheeks (for a more lifted look), plumping lips (for a sensuous pout), and brightening under-eye hollows (to look less tired or sleep-deprived).

Which Treatment is Right for You?

Ultimately, which treatment is right for you depends on your specific concerns. If you're looking to relax facial muscles and reduce wrinkles, Botox may be the better choice. If you're looking to restore lost volume, enhance facial features or fill in deep wrinkles, dermal fillers may be the way to go.
